Ask the Constitution

Can someone convicted of an election offence register to vote?

No

Not for five years. A person convicted of an election offence in the preceding five years does not qualify to register as a voter.

Article 83 lists three conditions for voter registration: being an adult citizen, not being declared of unsound mind, and not having been convicted of an election offence during the preceding five years. After five years, this particular bar no longer applies.

“has not been convicted of an election offence during the preceding five years.”
