Ask the Constitution

Can a Governor be removed from office?

Yes

Yes, on grounds set in the Constitution; an Act of Parliament sets the removal procedure.

Article 181 lists the grounds: gross violation of the Constitution or any other law, serious reasons to believe the governor committed a crime, abuse of office or gross misconduct, and physical or mental incapacity. Parliament must pass legislation setting out the procedure. Article 182 says the deputy governor then takes over.

β€œA county governor may be removed from office on any of the following groundsβ€” (a) gross violation of this Constitution or any other law;”
