Can MPs decide their own salaries?
No. The Salaries and Remuneration Commission sets the pay and benefits of all State officers, including MPs.
Article 230 gives the Salaries and Remuneration Commission the power to set and regularly review the remuneration and benefits of all State officers; Article 260 lists MPs as State officers. Article 116 adds that a law giving MPs a direct financial interest cannot take effect until after the next general election.
